Pegah Ahmadi 1974

land: Nederland
taal: Engels
Pegah Ahmadi (1974) was born in Teheran and studied Persian language and literature at Teheran University. She had her first poetic inspiration when seven years of age – while the rest of the family was watching a feature film, she went over and sat in a corner, where she wrote the following lines:

A beautiful flower has flowered
like the beauty of a secret
the beauty of a river
the beauty of a poem, the sound of a song
like the beauty of a pure song.

From the age of nineteen, her poems began to appear in literary periodicals, and she was a regular member of the many poetic gatherings of the time.
In 2000, her first collection Op de laatste sol(G) (On the final sol (G)) appeared, which, as she herself has said, consisted of romantic girlish poems. But the critics praised her strong, imaging language and saw similarities between her poetry and that of the legendary poetess Forough Farrokhzad, who died young. With her second collection Cadens (2002; Cadence), she associated herself with the linguistic experimentation that was de rigueur in Persian poetry in the 1990s. In that collection her language is more cryptic and her poems more abstract.
Her most recent collection mijn deze dagen is de keel (2004; ???) contains historical elements that serve as metaphors for social developments. In her most recent poems she has consciously distanced herself from a female tone of voice and displays an adult, mature use of language. Ahmadi says about them: ‘There comes a time in your life when sentimentalism can provide no answer to everyday questions. You are confronted by the blackness of your culture and the depth of your history and are compelled to devote attention to the responsibility that society brings with it. Personal experiences or abstract games can no longer match such entities.’
Ahmadi writes reviews of poetry, translates American poetry, including the poetry of Sylvia Plath, and is at present editor-in-chief of the poetry periodical Paperik.
